COURSE OVERVIEW

Antibiotic resistance (ABR) is considered to be a silent pandemic poised to reverse a century of medical progress, rendering antibiotics ineffective in treating even the most common infectious diseases. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention more than 2.8 million antibiotic-resistant infections occur in the U.S. each year, and more than 35,000 people die as a result. Globally, it is estimated that 700,000 people die from drug-resistant infections yearly. Unless major actions are taken this number is projected to rise to 10 million yearly by 2050 at an economic impact of 100 trillion dollars per year.

Dedicated prevention and infection control efforts in the U.S. reduced deaths from anti-biotic-resistant infections by 18% overall and by nearly 30% in hospitals. However, the number of people facing antibiotic resistance is still too high. More action is needed to fully protect people. Improving the way antibiotics are prescribed and used or “antibiotic stewardship,” is critical to effectively treat infections, protect patients from harms caused by unnecessary antibiotic use, and combat antibiotic resistance.

Aiming to combat the threat of antibiotic resistance to patient safety and public health, the Jefferson College of Nursing developed this educational offering on antibiotic stewardship specifically for nurses. The course will help nurses participate and lead antibiotic stewardship nursing practices and deliver effective and consistent messages to patients and the public about antibiotic use and antibiotic resistance.
